WHO ARE WE?
At PEAL, we are committed to transforming the poultry industry in Rwanda and East Africa. Under our brand name Cooko, our mission is to provide authentic and affordable chicken that aligns with local tastes and adheres to the highest standards of quality.
Cooko stands for “real chicken” —Inkoko Koko— representing our promise to deliver the most genuine and ethically grown chicken in the market.
We pride ourselves on our transparent farm-to-fork process, ensuring that every chicken we produce is not only delicious and nutritious, but most importantly safe for everyone’s consumption. Our dedication to local production also supports the community of over 330 small-scale farmers in Bugesera and guarantees freshness in every product.
We believe in building economies through developing local communities.
Since our operations commenced in 2014, we have been powered by a team of a 100 staff, 95% of whom are Rwandan, 90% of whom are from the surrounding villages in Mayange, Bugesera.
We maintain a strong commitment to gender equality with 50% of our staff being women. We also work with a network of more than 230 small scale contract farmers in Bugesera, with the majority of them being women.
WHY CHICKEN?
Chicken is the most consumed meat globally for many reasons – the quick turnaround time means that it can be the cheapest meat protein to be produced. It is also high in protein and lower in calories, fat and cholesterol compared to red meat, and rich in essential vitamins like iron, zinc and vitamin B.
But why is chicken still so expensive in Rwanda…?
Feed is over 70% of the cost of producing any livestock, meaning this has the biggest impact on the overall cost of production per chicken. The costs of raw materials for feed continue to skyrocket in Rwanda post-pandemic, which means the costs also increase…
